Dr. A.B. Dey is a globally renowned geriatrician with more than four decades of experience in clinical care, academics, research, and policy related to ageing and geriatric medicine. He is currently serving as the Chairperson – Geriatric Medicine at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram. Widely regarded as a pioneer of geriatric medicine in India, Dr. Dey has played a transformative role in establishing geriatric medicine as a vital clinical discipline essential for healthy ageing.
He underwent advanced training in geriatrics through a prestigious Commonwealth Medical Fellowship at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Dr. Dey spent 38 years at AIIMS, New Delhi, progressing from Senior Resident to Professor and Head of the Department of Geriatric Medicine, a position he held from 2012 until his superannuation. His leadership was instrumental in developing comprehensive geriatric services, academic programs, and research initiatives at the national level.
In addition to his academic career, Dr. Dey has served as Director of the Venu Geriatric Institute, a not-for-profit ambulatory care facility in New Delhi, and as Consultant for Healthy Ageing at the World Health Organization (WHO), South-East Asia Regional Office, where he contributed to regional ageing and public health strategies.
Dr. Dey has been internationally recognized as one of the “Healthy Ageing 50: Leaders of the World” for his exceptional contributions to advancing geriatric medicine. His clinical interests span the entire spectrum of ageing-related health issues, with particular focus on multi-morbidity, rational medication use, dementia care, long-term care, and end-of-life support. He is also an accomplished researcher, contributing to landmark global studies on ageing, dementia, and population health published in leading international journals.
